Clive Palmer is to be congratulated for his initiative in bringing two American trotting stallions to Queensland. Since the re-introduction of the trotter to Queensland very little has been done to engender development of the trotting gait and trotting races in Queensland. Mr Palmer obviously understands that the sport of harness racing needs diversity and the diagonal gait provides that. It is a pity that other high fliers in the industry don’t seem to understand this. To date trotting ranks consist of older horses who have reached their mark in Victoria or New Zealand and these horses are not the future of trotting. There are some trainers who have appreciated this and are breeding their own trotters, but Mr Palmer’s initiative provides the opportunity for Queenslanders to breed and race their own horses. This initiative needs support and the future of the square trotter depends on that support.
